Their 2006 debut had introduced a band steeped in drone, garage rock, Vietnam-era paranoia, feedback, and occult atmosphere. Directions to See a Ghost takes that same foundation and pushes it outward, creating a record that feels less like a set of songs and more like a dark psychedelic environment: heavy, ritualistic, feverish, and deliberately consuming.

The Black Angels emerged from Austin, Texas, with a sound that treated psychedelia not as colourful nostalgia, but as threat, trance, and political unease. Their name, drawn from The Velvet Underground’s “The Black Angel’s Death Song,” signalled a connection to drone, repetition, and underground danger from the beginning. On Directions to See a Ghost, those qualities are intensified. The album is slower to reveal itself than Passover, but its power lies in that patience. It builds through accumulation: riffs repeat, organs swell, percussion locks into ritual patterns, and Alex Maas’ voice drifts through the haze like a warning.

The album’s title is perfect for the music. Directions to See a Ghost suggests a ritual, a map, or an instruction manual for entering a haunted state. The record often feels like it is guiding the listener toward something hidden rather than presenting itself directly. Its ghosts are musical, historical, political, and emotional: the ghosts of 1960s psychedelia, the ghosts of war, the ghosts of lost countercultures, and the ghosts that gather inside repetition and echo. The album does not chase clarity. It invites immersion.

Compared with Passover, the production is thicker, more expansive, and more enveloping. The guitars are heavy with tremolo, fuzz, and drone; the organ and keyboards create a dense, spectral atmosphere; the drums often move with a slow, marching insistence; and the vocals are buried just enough to feel like part of the overall fog. The Black Angels understand that psychedelic music depends on space and pressure as much as melody. Here, sound becomes weather: dark, dusty, and full of electricity.

“Bad Vibrations” opens the album with a title that reverses the peace-and-love clichés often attached to psychedelia. The mood is immediately tense and ominous, built around repetition, echo, and the sense of something unstable moving beneath the surface. It functions as a statement of intent: this is psychedelic rock as disturbance, not escape. The band are not offering a trip into brightness, but a descent into shadow.

“Doves” and “Science Killer” deepen the record’s atmosphere of suspicion and dread. The latter is one of the album’s key tracks, with its insistent rhythm, dark vocal delivery, and sense of modern paranoia. The Black Angels often sound as if they are channelling the anxieties of one era through the equipment of another: 1960s-style psych and garage textures carrying twenty-first-century fear, war fatigue, and social unease. That tension gives the album much of its force.

“Mission District” and “You on the Run” bring a more direct garage-psych charge, showing that the band’s extended, droning approach can still produce immediate hooks and forward movement. “You on the Run” in particular became one of the album’s standout tracks, with its urgent pulse and haunted vocal atmosphere capturing the band’s gift for making pursuit, paranoia, and desire feel like the same thing. The song is concise by the album’s standards, but it still carries the record’s thick, spectral weight.

The album’s longer pieces are central to its identity. Tracks such as “18 Years,” “Deer-Ree-Shee,” and “Never/Ever” stretch the band’s sound into more patient and hypnotic forms. These songs are less concerned with conventional rock dynamics than with mood, trance, and endurance. Riffs circle, textures deepen, and small shifts become significant. The music asks the listener to give in to repetition rather than wait for obvious release. That is where much of the album’s psychedelic power lies.

“Deer-Ree-Shee” is especially important to the record’s sense of ritual. Its title and structure suggest incantation, and the music moves like a ceremony unfolding in slow motion. The Black Angels’ version of psychedelia is often spiritual in a dark, ambiguous sense. It does not offer easy transcendence. Instead, it suggests that altered states can reveal fear, memory, and buried violence as much as beauty.

Alex Maas’ vocal presence remains one of the band’s defining elements. His voice is distant, nasal, ghostly, and often heavily reverbed, giving the songs a sense of transmission rather than performance. He does not dominate the music in a traditional frontman role; he haunts it. The lyrics are full of war, death, ghosts, pursuit, love, danger, and psychic disturbance, but they often function as fragments inside the larger atmosphere. The voice becomes another instrument in the drone.

The guitars are equally crucial. Christian Bland and the band use fuzz, tremolo, feedback, and simple repeated figures to create a sound that is heavy without relying on metal’s density or classic rock’s soloing. The guitar is not primarily a vehicle for virtuosity; it is a tool for hypnosis. This connects The Black Angels to The Velvet Underground, Spacemen 3, The 13th Floor Elevators, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and the long history of minimal psychedelic rock where one chord, if held long enough, can become a world.

The rhythm section gives the album its physical weight. Many tracks move with a pounding, almost martial quality, reinforcing the group’s fascination with war imagery and ritual movement. Stephanie Bailey’s drumming is steady, forceful, and patient, giving the long songs a centre while allowing the atmosphere to expand. The result is music that feels both grounded and hallucinatory — a body moving through fog.

In the context of the late-2000s psych revival, Directions to See a Ghost was a major statement. It helped establish The Black Angels not simply as a promising modern psychedelic band, but as one of the movement’s central acts. Their role in Austin’s psych scene, and later their association with Levitation / Austin Psych Fest, helped shape a wider international network of bands, labels, festivals, and listeners interested in heavy drone, garage psych, and analogue darkness.

In The Black Angels’ discography, Directions to See a Ghost is the great expansion after the debut. Passover is more compact and immediate, while later albums such as Phosphene Dream and Indigo Meadow would bring sharper songwriting, brighter colours, and more varied production. But Directions to See a Ghost remains one of the band’s most immersive records: long, deep, shadowed, and completely committed to the trance.

The album’s artwork reinforces its haunted, ritualistic character. Its stark monochrome imagery and occult-psych visual language match the music’s sense of darkness, repetition, and altered perception. Like the best modern psych sleeves, it feels less like a simple cover image than an entry point into a wider atmosphere. The visual world and the sound world are tightly connected: black-and-white, distorted, symbolic, and mysterious.

For collectors, Directions to See a Ghost is essential. It is one of the key records of the 2000s neo-psychedelic revival, an important The Black Angels release, and a major title for anyone interested in drone rock, garage psych, modern acid rock, or the darker continuation of 1960s psychedelic traditions. Original Light in the Attic pressings, later vinyl editions, coloured variants, CD versions, and related singles all carry strong interest because the album captures the band at one of their most immersive and uncompromising moments.

More than a decade after its release, Directions to See a Ghost still sounds dense and powerful. “Bad Vibrations” still opens the record with ominous force. “You on the Run” still moves with haunted urgency. “Science Killer” still feels like modern paranoia filtered through vintage equipment. “Deer-Ree-Shee” still pulls the listener into ritual repetition. The album belongs to the 2000s psych revival, but its atmosphere feels older, darker, and more timeless than that label alone suggests.

Directions to See a Ghost is The Black Angels at their most expansive and hypnotic: a record where drone, garage rock, war-haunted imagery, tremolo guitar, ghostly vocals, and ritual repetition become one immersive psychedelic world. In 1965, he penned his most famous composition, "You're Gonna Miss Me," which he first recorded with a group called the Spades. The song and his high, swooping tenor brought him to the attention of another area band, the psychedelia-influenced 13th Floor Elevators, whose lyricist and jug player Tommy Hall invited Erickson to join; the Elevators soon cut their

own version of "You're Gonna Miss Me," and took the single to number 56 on the pop charts in 1966. While on the surface the Elevators rise to fame seemed ordinary, underneath things were anything but. The Elevators became the subject of considerable police harassment, and after Erickson was arrested for the possession of one lone joint in 1969, he pleaded insanity to avoid a prison term. A three-and-a-half year stint in the state's Hospital for the Criminally Insane followed; Erickson was diagnosed as a schizophrenic, and subjected to extensive electroshock therapy, Thorazine, and other psychoactive treatments. Though released from the hospital in 1973, Erickson was never the same person; he returned to performing with a new band, the Aliens, but his songs -- a series of horror film-influenced records including "Red Temple Prayer (Two-Headed Dog)," "Don't Shake Me Lucifer," and "I Walked with a Zombie" --

found little success. He did retain a devoted cult following, however, but his popularity was fully exploited by managers who took advantage of his instability to draw the singer into a series of unfair publishing contracts that resulted in a steady stream of unauthorized releases from which Erickson earned not a cent. In 1982, he signed a legal affidavit declaring that a Martian had

taken residence in his body, and gradually disappeared from music as the decade wore on. By the '90s, Erickson was struggling to survive on a $200 monthly Social Security stipend; after an arrest on mail theft charges (later dropped), he was re-institutionalized. In 1990, however, artists like R.E.M., ZZ Top, John Wesley Harding, and the Jesus and Mary Chain recorded his songs for the album Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye: A Tribute to Roky Erickson, which brought his work to a wider audience than ever before

Tracklisting Side 1 1/I'm Gonna Free Her 3:03 2/Starry Eyes 3:38 3/You Don't Love Me Yet 4:24 4/Please Judge 4:28 5/Don't Slander Me 4:15 6/We Are Never Talking 3:46 Side 2 1/For You (I'd Do Anything) 2:16 2/For You 3:01 3/Clear Night For Love 2:47 4/Haunt 3:40 5/Starry Eyes 3:10

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0986/1516/5219/files/roky-erickson---all-that-may-do-my-rhyme_1.jpg?v=1789676889
las-cobras-temporal
Las Cobras - Temporal
Temporal by Las Cobras

Psychedelia has always been deeply ingrained in South America's culture and history, harking all the way back to the 1960s with the politically charged Tropicalia movement. Its the heart of it all.’’ Renfro continues. To be able to listen and say “That’s it, that's the song. At times heavy like a jackhammer while maintaining the velvety vocal deliveries of Renfro, Trickster Blues is an album that embraces the natural indecision surrounding the songwriting process and goes with its gut decision every step of the way. By working on the principle that if the first impression of a song is good enough at the moment then it is good enough to be the final product, Trickster Blues paints a portrait of Renfro’s truth and his truth alone. “Maybe it's a terrible mistake, maybe its better this way” comments Renfro on the writing process. “I think that’s what this record will always mean to me. That's kind of the Trickster in a way. Many different facets, and much more than I can say in this context, but the name conjures a sort of pure whimsical mischief, a dose of raw wild impulse that reminds you to laugh at whatever it is that's happening, or else it's laughing at you. After touring the record across Europe and recruiting a full band, the project is back with its second album, XVII.

Now more of a collaborative effort, with Hannes Nyling and Christian’s brother Alexander joining the fold, the new record deals in a fuller more refined sound and packs a far heftier punch. Where the self-titled debut was a restrained, minimalist affair, XVII opts for slabs of industrial electronics and hard-hitting percussion. The gloomy 80s sensibilities are still there – see the occasional Cure-esque guitars and morose gothic vocals - but on XVII, NONN turn their eyes more towards the electronic affliction of EBM and synth-punk than the polished, more-digestible post-punk that came reverberating out of the decade.

This shift in the band’s sound all boils down to having to reinvent the songs when taking them on the road following the release of their debut, which saw them tour the UK and mainland Europe and play at a number of festivals; from Liverpool Psych Fest and Fuzz Club Eindhoven to, more recently, Endless Daze in South Africa. “Since the last record we’ve been doing a lot of shows which gave us a lot of inspiration. We reworked the old songs to sound a bit fuller and more fun to play live. Having to reinvent all the sounds and instruments from the first album really inspired the direction on XVII,” Christian remarks.

It’s clear that taking the project on the road with a full-band has had a notable effect. Tracks like ‘Clear’, ‘Home’ and ‘Beyond’ see NONN shift their bleak, darkwave-inflected post-punk into something far richer. It’s still got that minimalistic feel and the ear-worm melodies are still there, but it’s more sinister and fleshed out. Though, what truly sets this album apart from the debut is where the band have delved deeper into their electronic side. The industrial stomp of album-opener ‘Pray’ declares the LP’s merciless intent without a guitar in sight; it’s a destructive cut of throbbing synths and desolate drum machine, underpinned by Christian’s monotonous vocals. Partner that with the sparse, haunting electronics of ‘Believe’ and the mechanical synth-punk of ‘Hide’ and it’s clear that NONN are at their best when truly embracing their deeply-cherished Moog Sub Phatty, using it to exorcise the many demons lurking beneath the noise.
Fuzz Club Session by The Gluts

We dragged The Gluts from their native Milan to bring them aboard Soup Studio, a boat turned recording studio in East London's Trinity Buoy Wharf. Famously lauded as the loudest band in NYC, their thunderous noise-rock has seen them pick up a cult following and shatter many unsuspecting eardrums across the globe. With no release or live show similar to the last, APTBS have continually twisted their malevolent sonic assault into something not of this world. Following 2018s Pinned LP (Dead Oceans) the trio are back once again – this time with a live session LP on London-based imprint Fuzz Club.

Whilst in London at the end of a European tour in support of Pinned, the band spent the day at Lovebuzz Studio in South London to lay down a Fuzz Club Session, due for release February 15th as a vinyl exclusive alongside a collection of videos which will be released online. Raw, punishing and unpredictable, the LP – recorded live in one take - perfectly captures the APTBS ethos through-and-through and sees the unwavering intensity of their live show committed to wax like never before.

“It’s good to record at the very end of the tour,” reflects Oliver Ackermann, the band’s vocalist/guitarist and founding member: “You’ve been playing these songs all tour and there’s a certain point when you kind of get tired of them so you have to reinvent what they mean and what happens in them. I feel like that always pushes things to the next level. It’s exciting.” Some songs on the session may date back a decade but, true to the APTBS way, they’re totally reconfigured and pushed to their very limits. Spanning their lengthy back-catalogue, there are two tracks from Pinned (‘Never Coming Back’ and ‘Punch Back’), one from 2015’s Transfixiation (‘We’ve Come So Far’), one from 2012’s Onwards To The Wall (‘Drill It Up’), another from their 2007 S/T album (‘Ocean’) and a previously unreleased track (‘Chrome Shadow’).

What makes this LP stand out is the way in which the live setting perfectly captures the band’s ability to work as a collaborative unit; every member feeding off one another, their tight-knit playing hardened by months on the road. Ackermann’s visceral guitars and FX pedal manipulations may be what defines the APTBS sound but just as integral on this LP is Dion Lunadon’s scuzzy, remorseless basslines and the primal percussion and snarling vocals of Lia Simone Braswell, who joined the band just last year.

There aren’t many bands who can make deafening chaos sound so tight and meticulous but that’s just how APTBS roll. The Fuzz Club Session LP serves as a perfect indoctrination into the fuzzed-out world of A Place To Bury Strangers - taking you through a no-holds-barred tour of their discography whilst also offering a glimpse into the almost-hypnotic power of their live show. These three K-Hole anthems are an experimental exercise in ambient, drone and dark electronics.”

The titular, opening track ‘Bliss’ – “a Dionysian meditation put to sound” – offers a menacing insight into what’s to follow on the rest of the EP. Across it’s 12-minute running length, the Dutch band envelope the listener with a deluge of dark, droning electronics, eerie chiming bells and a propulsive beat that’s submerged beneath a stormy sea of feedback that twists, throbs and hisses away from start to finish. ‘Moon’ is something of a comedown from the former; in
absence of the previous track’s 4/4 beat ‘Moon’ is instead a piece of shadowy ambient drone that sounds like La Monte Young in the clutches of a terrifying hallucinogenic-induced fever dream. One of those records was ‘Taste’, the 1989 debut album from The Telescopes now set to be reissued by London-label Fuzz Club to celebrate its thirtieth anniversary. Hailing from Burton-On-Trent, an industrial UK town in the heart of the Midlands, if you were a regular gig-goer from that part of the world around that time you’ll have already seen this five-piece share stages with the likes of Primal Scream and My Bloody Valentine or, if not, touring around the UK with Spacemen 3 and The Jesus & Mary Chain. The Telescopes’ live shows were often a memorably ferocious affair; the primal scream of vocalist and founder Stephen Lawrie cutting through unsuspecting audiences like butter through a knife, aided and abetted by the two-guitar assault and taut rhythm section of his band.

Following their fast-rising notorious live reputation and the release of three singles (the first of which being a split flexi-disc with Loop), The Telescopes released their debut album, Taste, in 1989 on the now defunct What Goes On label. It was an unrefined bolt out of the blue. A sonic feast capable of transforming from visceral to tranquil in a matter of seconds. Even now, listening to blissful opener ‘And Let Me Drift Away’ as it melts into the brutal ‘I Fall, She Screams’ sends shivers up the spine. There’s little respite for the rest of side one, ‘Oil Seed Rape’ thuds and groans, then ‘Violence’ follows suit. All scratchy guitars that sound as if they were designed primarily to bludgeon senses. ‘Threadbare’ then ‘The Perfect Needle’ – the only single taken off the album – bringing the first half to an uneasy close.

The second side kicks off with ‘There Is No Floor’, an ode to Roky Eriksson via My Bloody Valentine’s ‘Feed Me With Your Kiss’ that ultimately merits its mention alongside both. ‘Anticipating Nowhere’ is the sound of a punk rock had it not jumped on the nostalgia gravy train instead, while the sinister ‘Please, Before You Go’ finds both Lawrie and Doran at their vocally harmonious finest. ‘Suffercation’ captures the ferocious demeanour of their live show while ‘Silent Water’ tells its own desolate tale of being buried at sea as a halo of pedal infused noise engulfs Lawrie’s vocals forthwith. Culminating in ‘Suicide’, the traditional ending to their live set at this juncture, its continuous loop only bringing the song to a conclusion at the listener’s command.

Three decades have passed since its release yet ‘Taste’ still sounds like nothing else created before or after. After that they all but disappeared, not returning until eight years later with Radio Silence (2006) and Electric Suite (2008), both marking a departure from their early experimental electronica into a wider pool of kraut, psychedelic rock and atmospheric pop. We look forward to seeing you on the road sometime soon at a real show, but this is as close as we'll get for now. Released in tandem with the late artist’s 80th birthday celebrations, the album offers an extraordinary, unvarnished, and plainly poignant insight into one of America’s true poet-songwriters. Capturing Reed in his formative years, this previously unreleased collection of songs—penned by a young Lou Reed, recorded to tape with the help of future bandmate John Cale, and mailed to himself as a “poor man’s copyright”—remained sealed in its original envelope and unopened for nearly 50 years. Its contents embody some of the most vital, groundbreaking contributions to American popular music committed to tape in the 20th century. Through examination of these songs rooted firmly in the folk tradition, we see clearly Lou’s lasting influence on the development of modern American music – from punk to art-rock and everything in between. A true time capsule, these recordings not only memorialize the nascent sparks of what would become the seeds of the incredibly influential Velvet Underground; they also cement Reed as a true observer with an innate talent for synthesizing and distilling the world around him into pure sonic poetry.

Featuring contributions from Reed’s future bandmate, John Cale, Words & Music, May 1965 presents in their entirety the earliest-known recordings of such historic songs as “Heroin,” “I’m Waiting for the Man,” and “Pale Blue Eyes”—all of which Reed would eventually record and make indelibly influential with the Velvet Underground. Also included are several more previously-unreleased compositions that offer additional insight into Reed’s creative process and early influences. Produced by Laurie Anderson, Don Fleming, Jason Stern, Hal Willner, and Matt Sullivan, the album features newly-remastered audio from the original tapes by GRAMMY®-nominated engineer, John Baldwin. Just hours before, at a family dinner, his father had collapsed in front of him and had to be rushed to the hospital. That night Morby still felt the shock and fear lodged in his bones. So he gazed at the images until one of the pictures jumped out at him: his father as a young man, proud and strong and filled with confidence, posing on a lawn with his shirt off.

This was in January of 2020. As the months went on and the world dramatically changed around him, Morby felt an eerie similarity between his feelings of that night and the atmosphere of those spring days. Fear, anxiety, hope and resilience all churning together. The themes began twisting in his mind. History, trauma and the grand fight against time. Having the courage to dream, even while knowing the tragedy that often awaits those who dare to dream.

While his father regained his strength, Morby meditated on these ideas. And then, he headed to Memphis. He moved into the Peabody Hotel and spent his days paying tribute and genuflecting to the dreamers he admired. In the evening, he would return to his room and document his ideas on a makeshift recording set-up, with just his guitar and a microphone. The songs, elegiac in nature, befitting all he had seen, poured out of him.

Produced by Sam Cohen (who also worked on Morby’s Singing Saw and Oh My God), This Is A Photograph features musical contributions from longtime staples of Morby’s live band, as well as old friends and new collaborators alike. If Oh My God saw Morby getting celestial and in constant motion and Sundowner was a study in localized intent, This Is A Photograph finds Morby making an Americana paean, a visceral life and death, blood on the canvas outpouring. As Morby reminds us early on, time is undefeated. So what do we do while we’re still here? This is a photograph of that sense of yearning.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0986/1516/5219/files/kevin-morby---this-is-a-photograph_1.webp?v=1789677156
